Morels in a Pennsylvania Woods

$1,800.00

The image: morels grow on a woodland floor full of pine needles, moss, leaves, wild ginger, ferns, bedstraw, and cranesbill. An occasional land snail glides by.

Once, I found a morel growing at the buttressing roots of one of our large Slippery Elm trees and now every year in April, I check to see if they’ve come back. Alas, no such luck yet. (However, I did find Lion’s mane growing on a dead branch of one of our Silver Maple trees.)

This spring, a friend who is a mushroom hunter took us on a walk through a gameland local to us and we did find a few morels. But our diminutive and paltry handful paled in comparison to the copious and robust specimens of one of the local hunters. She knew those woods like the back of her hand and we watched as she criss-crossed the well-trodden hikers’ paths and filled her deep basket. They call it having “morel eye.” Our friend says that a regular hunter develops an intuition about mushroom locations. We Earth animals are fascinating creatures.

If you’ve never eaten morels, I recommend them; they are truly delicious.
