I’ve written before about my affectionately dubbed “revenge series” (in GALLERY), a group of paintings and drawings in which I’ve envisioned creatures as an aggregate— multiples. This idea started to form sometime in 2010 when I was thinking about how individuals in a flock, swarm, or school, can synchronize and move together as one, appearing as a single unit or entity. Intrigued, I began thinking how this idea might appear in a fantasy work of art, a genre known better for its individual human warriors fighting lone battles against a horde (eg. Frank Frazetta’s “berserker” series). What if I flipped the script and created an entity comprised of multiples? What might she accomplish?
The final drawing for Feast For Crows.
And, of course, making the entity female also works to flip the script even harder in a genre where a male figure is given the most agency, an individual conquering a sea of enemies. With multiples, I wanted to promote the idea that we can create social justice and change when we work together in an interdependent way— that we needn’t continue to be alone or isolated.
