Some time ago, my friend, Marian, asked me to make a sigil tile for her. What the heck was that? I thought. I’d read up on them a little bit but abandoned pursuing a finished project — other things commandeered my attention, I suppose.
Recently, I found myself taking this up again, incorporating old ideas and techniques with a different mindset and some fresh perspective.
A sigil, or “seal” is a magical symbol of a desired outcome. You can read more about them here. To create one, first condense a phrase or intention: take the letters and eliminate any duplicate letters (and vowels, if you wish) and then stylize them into abstract shapes. Using sacred geometry: combine circles, lines and angles to create meaningful designs. Incorporate existing symbols: merge ancient glyphs, planetary symbols, or mystical alphabets into the designs.
Some people choose to “activate” a sigil by meditating on it and charging it with intention. My meditation is the drawing and execution of the pieces. Perhaps the firing activates it. I could even leave them outside overnight on a Dark Moon.
So far, I’ve found that I really like the symmetrical and bilateral patterns, but I’d like to try a triskelion or other triangular design next.
I’ll repost again here when they’re glazed and fired with colors.
